This Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen is responsible for nosocomial pneumonia. Its virulence factors include exotoxins, proteases, lipases, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), pili, and flagellin protein.
Flagellin is the subunit protein which polymerizes to form the filaments of bacterial flagella. It has been shown to have a role in the stimulation of inflammatory response via Toll-like receptor 5.

FgtA (PA1091) is the glycosyltransferase that adds the deoxyhexose to the protein. PA1088 enzyme attaches the 209-Da modification to the deoxyhexose. PA1088, PA1089, PA1090, PA1091 constitute the flagellin glycosylation island.
